How do we measure the greatness of a man? Is it the legacy he leaves behind, the lives he touches, or the mark he makes on the world? Perhaps it is all of these. By any measure, Ernest “Clarke” Dummit was a giant among us, a man whose impact will endure for generations.
Clarke was not only a beloved partner but also an innovator in both the legal profession and business. His vision and leadership left an indelible mark on our firm and on the practice of law as a whole. Clarke had a genuine passion for practicing law and deeply valued the relationships he built with colleagues and clients.
Clarke Dummit dedicated his life to serving others—first in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served with determination and integrity, and later as a graduate of Wake Forest School of Law, practicing law for 39 years in courtrooms across the state. He helped thousands of clients, mentored hundreds of attorneys, shared his legal knowledge with the community, and taught his colleagues with a warmth and honesty that made him a joy to be around. Clarke approached every challenge with calmness, strength, and kindness, firmly believing that everyone deserved the protection of the law and a helping hand. He honored the struggle, expecting us to strive for integrity—not perfection—and to face our mistakes with grace. To hide them or shift the blame was to undermine the very integrity he cherished.
Clarke Dummit was not only a mentor and a friend but also a devoted father, grandfather, and husband. His easy laughter and stories—from courtroom experiences to travels around the world—helped create a workplace that his employees could call home, a place dedicated to justice and the rule of law, while also celebrating the joy of purpose and the adventures of life.
